If targeting a role that you have never fulfilled (eg. Chief Information Officer), is it wise to include "Seeking Chief Information Officer role" in the section just below your name, to improve recruiter search results when looking to identify suitable candidates? If not, how is it best to be noticed and considered for these unfulfilled roles?

The best thing to do is to engage your reader with a headline that is relevant and compelling. Being an available candidate is typically not anyone’s strongest skillset, so think more creatively about what you can say in the headline that is relevant and authentic to the role(s) you seek to fill. I would suggest something Continue Reading…

Am I an "All-Star"?

I have worked diligently to enhance my Profile Strength. It says I am an “All-Star” but it looks like it is less than 100% (see picture below)

Where in your profile is the personal branding message suppose to be inserted?

Can you be more specific? Maybe do you mean a personal branding statement? If that is what you are referring to, then using a personal branding statement can be a great leadoff piece for the profile itself. It may precede or follow a list of skills or chunks of category-specific text, depending on your visual Continue Reading…

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to place my SCC Web Folio into my LinkedIn page. I copy the URL but every time I paste it all that appears is the pie chart that is on the front of my web folio. Is this a LInkedIn glitch or something I / we can control?

You are not alone! There is an apparent ‘glitch’ in LInkedIn’s system. I see this on any client who links their WebFolio or other multi-paged website. The link presents with the photo of a randomly selected image from said website and, upon clicking on said image, moves user to a page where they need to click Continue Reading…

I understand not identifying myself as an active job seeker. I do question how to address the fact I am not currently employed in my profile as I don't have job that identifies a "Present" employer. Any suggestions?

Since you no longer have to indicate months on your LinkedIn profile, just leave it as years. You can get around choosing a month by selecting ‘Choose’ instead of an actual month. Therefore, it actually just says ‘X year –2014′ on the profile. Once contacted or questioned, of course, you will have your accurate details Continue Reading…

Do 'homeruns' on your resume need to be in numbers like X number of dollars? For one of my resume entries, I asked my former boss and he said that the impact of the CRM system I implemented was impossible to quantify.

Excellent career coaching question! Most often times, we have had a great accomplishment or outcome, yet not so easily documentable. I can try to get you to think about things in some different ways, which may yield some impactful, results-oriented language by throwing out these thought-provoking questions for you to think about. They are designed Continue Reading…

I'm still employed with my current company. Will my employer know that I've been looking at job postings?

You can turn off your activity broadcasts. Under Privacy & Settings within your Profile, there is an option to “Turn on/off activity broadcasts.” Turning of this setting will not notify others of your activity so that you can search job postings without telling all your connections. However, if you are in transition or happily employed, Continue Reading…

I am an active job seeker, how do I indicate this on my LinkedIn profile?

My industry thought (my HR/Career Management) is that you do not indicate you are seeking a position. Using the “LinkedIn job seeker badge”, or indicating as such in your profile headline is usually is not something that I personally suggest, because it possibly can be perceived as ‘needy’. It’s a distraction to the reader and not as Continue Reading…

Should I write my LinkedIn profile in the first, second, or third person voice?

have read different LinkedIn profiles, and there doesn’t seem to be consistency on the “voice” in which the profiles are written. What’s the rule? You get to make the rule! How do I write my LinkedIn profile so it sounds like ME?

Some of the LinkedIn profiles that I have seen seem self-indulgent. I couldn’t share that format with colleagues and keep a straight face. Others take a conversational tone but they seem so wordy they go against everything I’ve ever learned about business writing. What is right?  The most important thing to remember is that your LinkedIn profile is Continue Reading…

It depends on your situation. If you are in transition between jobs, you might want to be completely open so that others can view your Profile.
